Frequent Asked Questions about Cardiac Rehabilitation

What is cardiac rehabilitation?

CR is a medically supervised programme that provides a combination of exercise training and nutrition counseling, as well as education and support to help lower the risk of having another heart event, surgery, or return to the hospital. Exercise training is a cornerstone of cardiac rehabilitation and the secondary prevention of heart disease.

Can I exercise after a heart attack or heart surgery?

You should take part in exercises in order to prevent another heart attack or another blockage in your heart vessels. However, return to exercise should be done in a gradual and safe manner to minimise any risk of a cardiac event during exercise. In the early phase, Individuals should start with an endurance training programme and gradually progress to include weights training. However, before starting exercise, you must be certain you receive clearance from your cardiologist and/or surgeon (if you’ve had cardiac surgery).

For safety, you should undergo a treadmill stress test or submaximal exercise test before starting on a regular exercise programme.

Can I still lift heavy objects after my heart procedure?

You can lift weights after a heart attack. However, due to surgery-related precautions in the initial stage of your recovery, it is advisable for you to start with aerobic exercises first before embarking on resistance training.

For a start, it is important to ensure that the normal range of motion of your joints are preserved before progressing to lighter weights with emphasis on proper lifting techniques.

We will customise an exercise programme for you according to your health needs with the goal of improving your fitness, preventing injuries and preventing chronic diseases.
